On July 2, 2025 James Blake has performed in Turin, at OGR (Officine Grandi Riparazioni, a huge hub for art and creativity, as well as for tech and innovation.
The show was a piano solo, where Blake was surrounded by a sequencer, a keyboard, a piano and a full set of technological “stuff”, as he called them.
The show was experimental, as Blake himself intended, to “change things up” after years of all too similar shows.
Blake played some singles by his recent years (Like the End, You’re Too Precious, with some covers (The Limit to Your Love, Godspeed, A Case of You) and even one to this date unreleased song that will feature on his next album (Trying Times).
At some point, Blake performed Life Round Here, from his album Overgrown (2013), which then became, after an almost techno moment, Retrograde.
Blake was determined to concoct a real experience in this show, with a clear vision of the songs he wanted to play, and the way he wanted to perform them.
At some point, people started shouting their favorite songs, hoping he’d pick up one. Which he did, only to state immediately after that he chose that song because it came on his mind, “not because you said it”.
When that song ended, someone else tried their luck. “This is not a wedding, bruv”, Blake answered.
James Blake experimented with this concert, rendering old songs in new ways, and producing new experiences that only a live concert can convey.
Fresh air and the usual warmth are some way to describe this concert: something new, with a firm grasp on who James Blake is, and what is becoming.
What you read has no intent of being a review of the concert, it merely represents an invitation to discover live music. I hope you felt even slightly invited to this experience, too.
