single sound: Harvest Moon, by Poolside
a cover of Neil Young with the coolness of a Californian summer
When we were strangers I watched you from afar
From the band's name alone, a chill, sun-kissed, summery and refreshing imagery is evoked.
And the expectations are all met, in Harvest Moon, track #4 on Pacific Standard Time, the first album by Poolside, a band from Los Angeles, California.
The band was formed in 2011 by Jeffrey Paradise and Filip Nikolic (Turbotito); it now comprises the former, plus Vito Roccoforte, Mattie Safer, Alton Allen, and Casey Butler as tour members.
The song is a cover of Neil Young's, and it's produced with a new disco touch in mind: a beat bursts from the beginning, bass lines come to support the rhythm, and Nikolic's voice arrives muted, then opens up more in the chorus.
The lyrics are a classic love song - I mean, an excellent love song.
The distinctive feature of the track, which made me turn up the volume on the speakers, is all in the sound that the cover conveys: it always seems on the verge of exploding, and it sustains itself for all six minutes tremendously well.
A song to listen to in the evening, at sunset, at night: it's worth staying awake for.
When we were lovers I loved you with all my heart
